This short course is for people age 16+ who are interested in applying to either the BA Production Technology and Management programme or the BA Production Arts and Design at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Day one (14th November) of the course will be taught ONLINE and runs from 10am – 2pm. During the session Ros Maddison, Head of Production, will outline the application process for both BA programmes. The session will cover topics such as:

  • The process of applying
  • Discussion of the Portfolio and guidance on submission
  • How to prepare for interview questions
  • What to look for in the performance visit for the Interview Task
  • How to approach the creative response in the Interview Task

You will also have a chance to have your own individual questions about the application answered by the Head of the Programme.

Day Two (21st November) of the course is designed just for those students who are interested in applying to the BA Production Arts and Design programme at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. It is designed and led by experienced Production lecturers and aims to support your preparation for the interview process.

This day is IN PERSON at our Production building at Wallace Studios and runs 10am – 4pm. It focuses on offering personal advice about your production arts and design portfolio. Areas such as what to show and what to leave out, presentation techniques and suggestions for development will be included. You will also take part in a mock interview, to get insight into the interviewing process first hand and receive feedback and guidance on your interview technique.

By the end of the course you should have:

  • Improved your understanding of the BA Production Arts and Design programme at RCS
  • Developed an understanding of the entry requirements for a programme of study in production arts and design and how to prepare for the interview itself
  • Been offered advice on developing existing personal art portfolios in order to best represent your abilities at interview
  • Undertaken script-analysis activities which will help support your preparation for application

All students should attend Day One, but Day Two is designed specifically for those applying for the Production Arts and Design degree course. Although this course specifically prepares students for interview at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, it provides skills and experience transferable to other contexts.

Course Information

There are no entry requirements for this open access course.

This course will focus on the application process for both the Production Technology and Management and Production Arts and Design degrees and, as a result, would be most beneficial for those at point of application.

Students do not need to have previous experience. Students should show up to class eager to learn and take part.

Course Preparation

In advance of the second day (21st November) we ask that students:

  • Observe a  stage production of your choice – this could be a recorded production streamed for TV or the internet.
  • Please bring in and be prepared to show any relevant examples of your current portfolio/work to the relevant session. This should include any physical pieces (or photographs) or work you have completed or are working on

We advise checking that students have access to Teams prior to the course starting.

Agnes Allan Bursary

Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.

The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in drama, music, production or screen.

Anyone who wishes to take part in our Short Courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.

James McAvoy Drama Scholarships

BAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is committed to nurturing the creative potential of young Scots who experience barriers to access and participate in drama at RCS Short Courses.

James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.

The scholarship aims to support applicants who would otherwise find meeting the cost of tuition fees at RCS a barrier to accessing pre-Higher Education drama training at the Royal Conservatoire.
