Staged at the Castle (ages 15-17)

Romeo & Juliet: Club Verona

Residential Summer School for Young People

Overview

Club Verona is alive. Are you?

This year, our summer school brings Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy Romeo and Juliet to life like never before – set in the pulsing heart of a modern rave at Club Verona. Club goers will dive into this immersive experience to hone their acting, movement, and storytelling against a backdrop of beats, lights, and energy that makes the story jump off the page. It’s more than theatre — it’s an immersive adventure where young performers ages 15-17 can express themselves, make new friends, and unleash their creativity with that Verona Vibe.

Based at Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock (40-minutes drive from Glasgow), students will work to bring the show together ahead of the performance. Working and living on site will give students a truly immersive experience in this rustic and fun filled location.

Each day will consist of acting and movement rehearsals led by experienced theatre practitioners. This summer school is open to young people aged 15-17, with places kept deliberately limited to ensure everyone gets individual attention.

With its medieval towers, historic halls, and beautiful parkland, Dean Castle provides an inspiring backdrop to a story where one wrong choice can change everything. Rehearsals take place in safe, professional spaces within the castle site, while the final performance transforms the venue into a stage worthy of this epic story.

Drama. Romance. Chaos. Neon Lights. Your summer starts here.

Please note that although we aim to schedule the sharing times during the course hours, on some occasions they may be go beyond the course end times. All final sharing times will be confirmed at least 2 weeks before the course start date.

Throughout the course you will:

  • Become immersed in the rehearsal process of a full-length play
  • Develop your choreography and vocal skills
  • Explore techniques which can enhance character development and story-telling, through the analysis and rehearsal of monologues and scenes
  • Discover the opportunities and challenges of working on location

Dean Castle sits within the stunning 200 acre grounds of Dean Castle Country Park. The recently renovated 14th century castle is situated in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. The castle was the home of the Boyd family for over 400 years. It was inherited by the 8th Lord Howard de Walden in 1899 who restored the buildings which had lain in ruins since a fire in 1735. The Keep, dating to around 1350, houses outstanding displays that tell the story of the Boyd family and medieval life. From the exquisite craftsmanship and rarity of the musical instrument collection to the Viking sword that fires the imagination, the Dean Castle and the collections represent over 1000 years of the history of Ayrshire, its people and the story of Scotland.

Within Dean Castle Country Park, you will find the residential accommodation block attached to a public café. Then a short walk through the grounds, you’ll find the castle, woodlands, forest walks and Rural Life centre. The public will have access to the castle from 11am to 4pm, and you’ll be working in rooms within and around the castle, and rehearsal spaces on the grounds.

If you’re a fan of the hit show Outlander, Dean Castle was used as Beaufort Castle in Series 2.
