Overview
This one-day symposium explores contemporary approaches to singing through contributions from specialists in vocal performance, voice science, vocal health and related disciplines. Through presentations, demonstrations and discussion, participants will gain fresh insights into current developments in the field while engaging with a diverse community of voice professionals and enthusiasts.
Participants will engage with a series of presentations, demonstrations and discussion sessions led by specialists from a range of voice-related disciplines. Topics will explore contemporary approaches to singing, vocal performance, vocal health, technology and current research, with opportunities to consider how these perspectives can inform professional and artistic practice.
Learning will take place through a combination of expert-led talks, practical demonstrations, question-and-answer sessions and facilitated discussion. Participants will be encouraged to engage actively with presenters and fellow attendees, reflecting on how the ideas and approaches presented relate to their own interests and experience.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the symposium, participants will be able to:
- Describe current developments and emerging ideas in singing and voice-related disciplines.
- Recognise how research and evidence can contribute to our understanding of singing and vocal performance.
- Identify approaches that support healthy and sustainable voice use.
- Evaluate the potential role of technology and interdisciplinary collaboration in voice work.
- Reflect on how insights from the symposium relate to their own practice, study or professional interests.
- Engage in informed discussion with professionals from a range of voice-related backgrounds

Course Information
There are no entry requirements for this open access course. However, students should have an understanding of the singing voice, and experience in teaching or leading voice education is beneficial.

- Plan and prepare to attend the full day.
- Dress comfortably in clothes which are suitable for the activity you are taking part in.
- Bring a notepad and pen/pencil in case you wish to make notes.
- Please bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated during your class.
Learning will take place through a combination of expert-led talks, practical demonstrations, question-and-answer sessions and facilitated discussion. Participants will be encouraged to engage actively with presenters and fellow attendees, reflecting on how the ideas and approaches presented relate to their own interests and experience.
The symposium will provide approximately 6 hours of direct contact time with presenters and facilitators over the course of the day. As a stand-alone continuing professional development event, there is no formal assessment and no requirement for independent study before or after the symposium.
Participants will, however, be encouraged to pursue further reading and exploration of topics of particular interest following the event.

Agnes Allan Bursary
Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.
The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in drama, music, production or screen.
Anyone who wishes to take part in our Short Courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.
James McAvoy Drama Scholarships
BAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is committed to nurturing the creative potential of young Scots who experience barriers to access and participate in drama at RCS Short Courses.
James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.
The scholarship aims to support applicants who would otherwise find meeting the cost of tuition fees at RCS a barrier to accessing pre-Higher Education drama training at the Royal Conservatoire.
