Next generation of dance talent comes together for the first time in UK-wide showcase

Ballet students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland will take to the stage as part of a national dance showcase, bringing together the next generation of talent from across the UK’s leading dance institutions.

Third-year students on the BA Modern Ballet degree, who will graduate in July, will perform at Ballet Nights New Futures at Cadogan Hall on Tuesday, June 9.

Described as a celebration of what’s next for dance, it features students from ballet and contemporary vocational programmes on one stage for the first time, offering a rare, joined-up view of training.

RCS will perform alongside The Royal Ballet School, English National Ballet School, Central School of Ballet, Rambert School, Elmhurst Ballet School and Northern School of Contemporary Dance, in a programme featuring acclaimed choreographers, including Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Sir David Bintley, Ashley Page OBE and Hofesh Shechter OBE.

The Modern Ballet students will perform Submerge, a thrilling new work choreographed by RCS lecturer Diana Loosmore, that premiered at the school’s annual dance showcase at RCS in May.

Kerry Livingstone, Director of the School of Dance and Head of Scottish Ballet’s Associate Programme, will also offer an insight into training at RCS.

Kerry said: “Being part of Ballet Nights New Futures is a fantastic opportunity for our students. It places them on a national stage alongside peers from leading institutions across the UK and recognises the strength of training happening across the country.

“It’s a powerful moment to celebrate the next generation of artists shaping the UK dance scene.”

Jamiel Devernay-Laurence, Founder and Artistic Director of Ballet Nights, and a visiting artist at RCS, said: “The UK’s dance schools and colleges have always been centres of excellence, producing greatness in dance, and greatness in people.

“I’ve been lucky enough to participate in, work with, and learn from many of these institutions. To now bring them all together on one stage, for a first-of-its-kind event, is a real honour.”

As the third-year ballet students get ready for graduation, and their next steps in the professional world, graduate Georgia Richardson, an Artist with Cape Town City Ballet, reflects on her time on the Modern Ballet degree: “My time at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is something I’ll treasure forever.

“The Modern Ballet course prepared me well for both the physical and mental demands of company life, and now, dancing professionally, I find myself using the knowledge and discipline I gained during my time there every day.

“And as a bonus, I have a city like Glasgow that will forever feel like home.”
