RCS one of ten leading professional ballet schools pledging continued support for dance students during 2021 auditions
The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is one of ten professional ballet schools that have come together to send a unified message of support and reassurance to prospective students considering the next step in their training.
In response to Covid-19 and its impact on dance training and preparation, the UK schools have moved preliminary auditions online for dancers who wish to start their studies in September this year. RCS joins Central School of Ballet, English National Ballet School, Elmhurst Ballet School, The Hammond School, KS Dance, Northern Ballet School, Rambert School, The Royal Ballet School and Tring Park School for the Performing Arts.
As a result of the global restrictions imposed by Covid-19, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland moved all ballet auditions online in 2020 and will continue with this format – from preliminary stages to final round auditions – throughout 2021 to offer confidence and clarity in an ever-changing landscape.
“We have a robust and well-established online audition format that we have utilised for many years for overseas applicants,” explained Kerry Livingstone, Head of Modern Ballet at RCS.
“After much consideration, we decided that this format is the best way to ensure the safety of all students, parents and staff. We know it will be disappointing for applicants not to attend RCS but auditions will be conducted by the same in-person panel.
“It also allows us to offer a fair and equitable process to all applicants, given the constantly changing restrictions, particularly around travel. We can’t wait to meet prospective students online and look forward to welcoming them to RCS.”
Last summer, the ten schools joined forces to delay the start of the audition process, moving it from autumn 2020 to January 2021, to give prospective students more time to consider their options and work through the application process.
The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s three-year BA Modern Ballet degree is delivered in partnership with Scottish Ballet. The programme is designed to help dancers develop secure classical and contemporary dance technique and prepare them for the profession as a confident, versatile and technically strong dancer.
Students graduate with the skills required by professional companies as well as the ability to communicate effectively with other artists, choreographers and audiences. Recent graduates have joined companies including Scottish Ballet, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, National Theatre of Belgrade, Ballet Cymru and National Ballet of Portugal.
