The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland attracts the world’s most talented and committed students to Glasgow to develop their skills further with our expert teachers.
It’s no surprise then that many make their impact felt on the world, even whilst they are still studying. Mark Good looks back at some of our students’ successes in 2017/18.
SOPRANO EMMA MOCKETT took the opera world by storm in February when she won the coveted Clonter Prize. Emma also sang for the world’s media at the launch of Festival 2018, a cultural celebration running alongside the Glasgow 2018 European Championships.
KYLE MACCORQUODALE was appointed Principal Bass Trombone with the Hallé Orchestra at the end of 2017, an amazing achievement for the fourth year BMus Performance brass student.
BASSOONIST RHIANNON CARMICHAEL successfully gained a trial for the position of Principal Contrabassoon with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
SAXOPHONIST LEWIS BANKS was chosen as one of the recipients of Making Music’s Philip and Dorothy Green Young Artists Awards. MMus student Lewis was also one of three finalists at the Bromsgrove International Musicians’ Competition and was awarded joint runner-up prize by the jury of Meurig Bowen, Roderick Williams OBE and Sarah Bruce.

COMPOSER AMIT ANAND wrote the soundtrack to Indian crime thriller movie Gultoo which was released worldwide. Amit recorded the score with fellow students from RCS.
OVER IN THE BALLET DEPARTMENT, third year students celebrated as offers of graduate contracts landed throughout the year. Keenan Fletcher was announced as one of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures cast members, whilst Anna Williams (pictured) secured a contract with Scottish Ballet as one of its new Artists. Fellow dancer Nuno Tauber was also offered a graduate contract with the National Ballet of Portugal..
ACTOR ANNA RUSSELL-MARTIN was awarded a place on the Citizens Theatre’s graduate scheme while Musical Theatre students Ross Baxter and Chiara Sparkes and actor Amy Kennedy gained places on Dundee Rep Theatre’s graduate scheme.
PRODUCTION STUDENTS showcased some of their best work in their end of year showcase in the Chandler Studio Theatre. Always a highlight in the RCS calendar, works this year included some rather spooky toys, some of which were taken to the West End Festival Parade.
BA FILMMAKING STUDENTS premiered their films to a sold-out screening at Cineworld. This was a last chance to see their work before they graduated into the profession.
