About Awakenings

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland presents Awakenings, a series of performances, talks and events exploring the contemporary significance, daring provocations and artistic legacy of Frank Wedekind’s groundbreaking play, Spring Awakening.

Premiered in 1906, the work shocked and scandalised audiences with its frank depictions of sexuality and teenage angst, while forging a reputation as one of the first great modern texts of the 20th century.

Two RCS productions take centre stage: a new retelling of Wedekind’s original play by Anya Reiss, performed at the Tron Theatre in BSL and English by students from the BA Performance programme; and Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s Tony™ Award-winning musical version from 2006 – its rock score and searingly emotional book applying an electrifying jolt to this tale of self-discovery – with final year BA Musical Theatre students
