LEAR by Will Shakespeare (with amendments)
A father king cleaves the body of his territory like a knife for two daughters whose falsity is so obvious a child would see through it, while the last daughter cannot say I love you at all. Thus begins a tragical-comical-historical-pastoral-romantical-absurdist-surrealist piece of writing full of improbable going-ons, unbelievable lies, absurd wrath, impossible disguises, pitiful suicide attempts, bad parenting, pathetic fallacy, pointless make-believe, acting crazy, acts of schoolboy excess, trippings and pushings and kickings, grotesque violence, other undignified things and seemingly unending accumulated deaths underscored by constant failures to recognise, to see and to speak what is undeniably true.
Runtime: 120 mins
This production contains scenes of violence, murder, body mutilation, death, theatrical weaponry, blood, suicide, flashing lights and may not be suitable for children.
Programme
“The absurd is born of this confrontation between the human need and the unreasonable silence of the world. […] If l were a tree among trees, a cat among animals, this life would have a meaning, or rather this problem would not arise, for I should belong to this world. I should be this world. […] There is no love oflife without despair of life.” – Albert Camus
“ON THE CALENDAR THE DAY IS NOT YET SHOWN
Every month, every day
Lies open still. One of those days
Is going to be marked with a cross.” – Bertolt Brecht
“Time is like a chicken with its head cut off, racing around madly, every which way. Blood is flowing from its decapitated neck, and we’re drowning in blood.” – Wajdi Mouawad
no kings, no truths, no futures no mothers
bags of blood and bones running around between desire and boredom
