Visiting Professor of Conducting, Martyn Brabbins, returns to take up the baton to direct the RCS Symphony Orchestra’s second concert of the year, which neatly ties together works by three composers: Weber, Walton and Hindemith.
Originally conceived as ballet music, Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis from the early 1940s takes themes by Weber and weaves them into an orchestral showpiece full of brilliant colour. Hindemith was honoured in similar fashion in the Variations by his friend William Walton, whose famous music for Laurence Olivier’s classic film adaptation of Henry V is at the heart of the concert. And we kick off with Weber’s stirring overture to his classic Romantic opera, Der Freischütz.
Weber Overture Der Freischütz
Walton Variations on a theme by Hindemith
Walton arr. Mathieson Suite from Henry V
Hindemith Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber
