Young pupils reach new creative heights

4 October 2024

Part of The Cumnock Tryst Festival 2024

Contemporary Music And Performance

Over the years The Tryst has developed a number of ground-breaking music projects for children and adults with additional support needs. This year James MacMillan has been working in Hillside School and the nearby Riverside Centre alongside Drake Music Scotland and Hebrides Ensemble. This concert comes from a series of creative workshops where all of those involved devised their own music and modes of expression.

“The Cumnock Tryst’s various collaborations with Drake Music Scotland over the years have been consistently inspiring and moving, showing that disability should never be a barrier to a love of, or a deeply involving engagement with, music-making. We’re looking at how creative music-making in particular can support those most vulnerable young people as they leave school and transition to a new and different routine. A difficult moment in their young lives. I’m especially delighted to be back working with our old friends Hebrides Ensemble, one of the truly great Scottish chamber groups.”
