An Evening of Indian Classical Music

Joyce Terret, born in Scotland, has spent more than 3 decades dedicating herself to the study of the Sarangi. Her journey took her to Varanasi where she undertook extensive training under the late Pandit Bacha Lal Mishra and the late Ustad Zakan Khan, receiving her tutelage through the traditional Guru Shishya Parampara. As one of the very few non-Indian students to have engaged within this tradition to such depth, her playing reflects an intimate understanding of the sarangi’s expressive language. In an era where much musical training is institutional or short term, Joyce’s path stands apart: a rare, lifelong personal commitment rooted in oral learning and discipline.

Hardeep Deerhe, known as Sodhi, is a Scotland-based Tabla player, composer, educator, and current producer of the Glasgow Mela. Deeply rooted in traditional learning whilst engaging with contemporary and cross-cultural performance, his work spans solo performance, accompaniment, composition and collaborative projects. Alongside performing internationally, Sodhi is also a lecturer at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the founder of Talking Tabla Scotland, an organisation dedicated to the promotion and development of Indian Classical Music and rhythm-based arts across Scotland.
