Die Fledermaus
By Johann Strauss II
Sung in an English translation by David Pountney

Director Caroline Clegg
Designer Janis Hart
Conductor Stefano Boccacci

Blackpool, 1954. The war is over and the Coronation has brought a new sense of optimism even though rationing is still in force. A spectacular masked ball is thrown by Russian exile Prince Orlovsky. But its organiser, Falke, has his own motives, not least revenge. As masks are donned, identities invented and respectable people lose their inhibitions, everyone discovers that everyone discovers that when you’re in Blackpool you really can become somebody else.

Students from RCS’s Vocal Performance and Opera programmes take to the stage for Strauss’ classic comedic operetta, in a sparkling new production which shifts the action from Vienna to the dizzying heights of Blackpool’s Tower Ballroom.
