Richard Iznaola Los Caprichos de Alany
Laura Husbands & Jonathan Leathwood Guitar
These twenty-six miniatures are somewhat whimsical vignettes in all keys, featuring a variety of technical procedures and expressive approaches for one and two guitars. They are modeled after historical styles, particular composers, forms and genres associated with specific geographical locations or cultural traditions. They are preceded by epigraphs by many authors, literary preambles ranging in nature from the descriptive and factual to the poetic, to be read before each piece is performed.
The caprichos are the musical component of a larger work. As Jonathan Leathwood describes it in his foreword to the book, “This is the second volume of a larger exploration of guitar virtuosity, Summa Kitharologica. In the first volume, the focus is on the physical mechanics of guitar technique. But as the title suggests, with its playful allusion to the comprehensive theology of Aquinas, there is more than detailed information about those mechanical matters; there are hints on how to transcend them. It is that transcendent, childlike spirit that finds its full expression in this second volume.”
