As a writer…. Johnny’s scripts include the award winning Wendy Hoose, The Incredible Adventures of See Thru Sam and A Perfect Stroke. He has been described as the ‘vanguard of post-modernist panto’, with 23 productions under his belt and a slew of nominations for these works. In the last few years Johnny has transitioned into television, working as part of the core writing team for BBC’s Continuing Drama River City (with 30+ Hour episodes under his belt) and Holby City. He has also been Associate Playwright for Playwrights Studio Scotland, mentoring new and emergent writing talents.

As a director….. he’s Co-Artistic Director of Random Accomplice Theatre Company and has toured work across the UK and further afield including New York, Prague, Spain, Hong Kong and Singapore. His favourite of all the venues to tour to is still the Harbour Arts Centre in Irvine. He’s worked for many theatre companies including National Theatre of Scotland, Dundee Rep, Perth Horsecross, Tron Theatre, Macrobert, Scottish Opera. Any of the ones he hasn’t worked with will not be receiving a Christmas card this year.

As an Educator… Johnny has had several educational resources published by Scottish Opera, has taken the role as Lead Artist in multiple CPD Primary and Secondary Teaching modules. He also served as Senior Tutor for RCS Youthworks programme, responsible for the co-ordination and appraisal of curriculum for over 500 young people and 22 tutors.

As a performer… Johnny pretty much just plays himself. Sometimes in lipstick. He once got told his fat suit was ‘cute’ by an audience member. He wasn’t wearing a fat suit.

Currently…. Johnny is under commission to the BBC, National Theatre of Scotland, Scottish Opera, Ayr Gaiety, macrobert and Tron Theatre.  He is Associate Artist with National Theatre of Scotland. Johnny is currently developing with FreeAtLast TV a reboot of the popular novels The Hamish Macbeth Mysteries by MC Beaton.
