Born in Hull in 1973, Nicholas Bayley studied with Duncan McTier at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.

At the age of 24 he was appointed as principal bassist with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, leaving in 2009 to take up his present position as principal bassist with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Nicholas teaches double bass at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and has performed as guest principal bassist with many of the UK’s major orchestras.

As well as giving many solo recitals around Britain, Nicholas has performed many concertos, the most notable of these in 2009 with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, when he gave the world premiere performance of Hafliði Hallgrímsson’s Double Bass concerto Sonnambulo, a work written especially for him and the SCO.
