Richard Smith is a BAFTA award-winning screenwriter who works in Los Angeles and Scotland. Alongside his creative work, Richard tutors Digital Film and Television students at RCS, delivering lectures over Skype and intensive masterclasses when in Scotland.

Richard has been writing professionally since 2002. He has film and TV projects in the UK and US, including one in Glasgow (titled Glasgow Kiss). His first two films were Leonard (a character drama, starring RCS alumnus Denis Lawson) and Trauma (a dark psychological thriller, starring Colin Firth). He has continued writing in both genres ever since and has worked with producers like Christian Colson, Warner Brothers, BBC, Ealing Studios and Overbrook Entertainment.

He created a screenwriting module for RCS, which includes classroom teaching and ongoing individual script development. This interlocks with other elements of the DFTV course, and has become a crucial part of the curriculum.
