Chris studied at the Guildhall School of Music with Denis Wick and Peter Gane. After a spell freelancing in London, he joined Scottish Opera as principal bass and contrabass trombone in 1984, a position he still holds. Since joining Scottish Opera, Chris has continued to work for orchestras throughout Great Britain, including the London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, Bournmouth Symphony, English Northern Philharmonia and all the Scottish orchestras.

Chris has performed as a soloist and given masterclasses in Glasgow, Manchester, London, Holland and Belgium and has commissioned new work for the bass trombone. He is active as a composer and has had his published works broadcast and recorded both in the UK and Europe. He has also worked as a consultant in the design of instruments, mouthpieces and accessories for Michael Rath and Wallace products.

Chris has been a member of staff at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland since 1991.
