Welcome
A warm welcome to the 2026 School of Dance Annual Performance.
It has been a busy and productive year for the School of Dance. Significantly, we introduced a new programme – the BA Dance Artist. This one-year programme was specifically designed to articulate with the further education sector to offer students the chance to ‘top-up’ their college qualifications and gain an undergraduate degree. This first cohort of students have been a wonderful addition to the School of Dance and you will see them performing in commercial and jazz, alongside our BA Modern Ballet students from all three year groups.
The opportunity to be on stage is the highlight of the year and particularly special for our graduates. The preparation for these performances started many months ago, with all cohorts participating in intensive choreographic periods with commissioned choreographers. This is an invaluable experience for the students – they learn how to contribute to a professional choreographic process, how to engage and pace themselves in rehearsals and how to adapt to a choreographer’s unique style and requirements.
The programme this year challenges the graduates to work at professional level in a range of dance styles. We are thrilled that the 3rd year BA Modern Ballet students will be performing new commissions by Pett Clausen-Knight, Daniel Davidson and Diana Loosmore (supported by the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Athenaeum Awards) and an excerpt from Sylvia. Our first and second years are performing new works from choreographers Madeleine Squire and Nicholas Shoesmith and the waltz from Giselle Act I. The performance opens with an excerpt from Swan Lake Act II, performed by second and third years. The BA Dance Artists are performing new jazz and commercial works by Rowan McGregor and Jaimie MacRae. The dancers are accompanied by the RCS orchestra.
You will also witness the efforts of the production students and staff, from technical stage management, to lighting and video design, sound, wardrobe and props – the performance is a learning opportunity for more than just our dancers! We are grateful to them for their support.
Dance at RCS has grown in both size and reputation since it was introduced in 2009, which is down to the combined hard work of our talented students and the entire programme team, who are committed to providing the very best teaching and professional preparation. The performances you will see on stage are a result of the entire year’s work, as the students build their skills in classes and rehearsals – we have a brilliant team of teachers and musicians who support the students’ learning. I am so grateful for the contribution each one of them makes. The staff team are truly committed to our students’ progress and their efforts reach far beyond the studio.
Our 2026 graduates have risen to the challenge of this performance, and we are so proud of everything they have achieved so far. We will miss them when they graduate but are excited to see their professional careers unfold.
Enjoy the performance!

Scottish Ballet: A Professional Partnership
We are grateful to Christopher Hampson (Artistic Director/CEO – Scottish Ballet) and all at the company for their ongoing and generous support of the programme.
The BA Modern Ballet programme was designed and is delivered in partnership with Scottish Ballet, giving students the opportunity to work with the world-renowned company, as well as acclaimed guest teachers and choreographers, throughout their studies. This offers a unique and invaluable insight into professional life whilst studying with us and students enjoy exclusive access to Scottish Ballet rehearsals.
There is also the opportunity to join the company on tour, and recently students have performed in Scottish Ballet productions such as The Scandal at Mayerling and The Nutcracker plus many more.
